Arzier is a municipality in the district of district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.
The official name of the municipality is Arzier-Le Muids. Le Muids (altitude : 695 m) is a small village which, due to its small size and proximity to Arzier (altitude : apr. 800 m) is part of the same municipality as its larger neighbor. Arzier natives are called "Brennards" because the village experienced a severe fire in its early days (derivative of French for burn "bruler"). Residents of Le Muids are called "Rafi."
The first mention of Arzier was in 1306 as the village Arsie. Throughout the Middle Ages Arzier's name is seen in documents as Arsie, Argier, and Arsier. Le Muids is first mentioned as a barn ( dependent upon the abbey of Oujon) in 1250. Settlers were granted land (for farming) in Arzier by the abbey of Oujon in 1304. In 1536 control of the region, and of all of the lands of the abbey were lost to a conquering duke from Bern. This duke wasn't appreciated because he did not let each village govern itself, causing numerous problems and much discontent. Less than a century had past before the Brennards and Rafi lost their patience and stopped farming altogether, descending into extreme poverty. As time went by and the land went to waste, the regional government decided to take drastic measures, and in 1664, granted Arzier political independence. The village still had to pay a tax to Nyon, but henceforth it managed its own affairs independently. This is seen as the beginning of Arzier's prosperity.
In the early days of independence, the local council was composed of 8 members, each elected for life terms. Half came from Arzier, the other half from Le Muids. Today the political structure is much more complex, with the executive branch being made up of a mayor, a vice-mayor and three ministers, and the legislative being made up of a council of a president, two vice presidents, seven other administrators, and 52 general members.

Die Gemeinde ist verkehrstechnisch gut erschlossen. Sie liegt an der Hauptstrasse von Gland nach Saint-Cergue, der Autobahnanschluss Gland an der A1 ist rund 10 km vom Dorf entfernt. Am 12. Juli 1916 wurde die Eisenbahnlinie Nyon - Saint-Cergue mit Bahnhöfen in Arzier und Le Muids in Betrieb genommen.

Arzier.Geographie.

Arzier liegt auf 870 m ü. M., 9 km nördlich des Bezirkshauptortes Nyon (Luftlinie). Das Dorf erstreckt sich am Jurasüdhang unterhalb des Molard, zwischen den Tälern des Ruisseau d'Oujon im Westen und des Ruisseau de la Combe im Osten, in aussichtsreicher Lage rund 500 m über dem Seespiegel des Genfersees. (1'044 m ü. M.) und den Bois d'Oujon auf den breiten Kamm der vordersten Jurakette. Diese ist im Bereich von Arzier gegliedert in mehrere gemäss der Streichrichtung des Juras von Südwest noch Nordost verlaufende Kalkrippen und dazwischenliegende teils moorige, oberirdisch abflusslose Senken, darunter das Marais Rouge und die Petite Enne. Die grössten Höhen befinden sich im westlichen Teil des Kammes mit dem Noirmont (1'567 m ü. M.; höchster Punkt von Arzier), Mont Pelé (1'536 m ü. M.), Mont Sâla (1'511 m ü. M.) und Vue de Genève (1'492 m ü. M.). Am Nordhang des Noirmont liegt der Creux du Croue, ein charakteristischer Ausräumungskessel, der seit 1987 unter Naturschutz steht. Ganz im Nordwesten reicht das Gemeindegebiet bis an den rechten Talrand des obersten Orbetals. Auf dem Jurakamm findet man typische Karsterscheinungen wie beispielsweise Dolinen, Karrenfelder und Höhlen. Das nur wenig begangene Gebiet, das in der Schutzzone des Parc Jurassien Vaudois liegt, ist von ausgedehnten Wäldern bestanden, dazwischen befinden sich Jurahochweiden mit den typischen mächtigen Fichten, die entweder einzeln oder in Gruppen stehen. Von der Gemeindefläche entfielen 1997 3 % auf Siedlungen, 71 % auf Wald und Gehölze, 25 % auf Landwirtschaft und etwas weniger als 1 % war unproduktives Land. (696 m ü. M.) auf einer Verebnungsfläche unterhalb des Dorfes und Montant (590 m ü. M.) am Jurafuss sowie zahlreiche Einzelhöfe, die weit verstreut auf den Höhen des Juras liegen. Nachbargemeinden von Arzier sind Saint-Cergue, Givrins, Genolier, Vich, Bassins und Le Chenit im Kanton Waadt sowie Bois-d’Amont und Les Rousses im angrenzenden Frankreich.
