Monthey is the capital of the district of Monthey in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.
Its population is of 15 118 (as of 2004) inhabitants (Montheysans). Monthey is located on the west side of the Rhone valley, south to the Leman Lake. Monthey is important to Swiss industry, with the former chemical company Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis, Syngenta and Cimo) and the metallurgical company Giovanola, there is an oil refinery in Collombey-Muraz, near Monthey. The city is close to the famous winter sports region, the Portes du Soleil.
This city is also home to Bolliger & Mabillard, world-famous roller coaster designers.

Die Autobahn A 9, die SBB-Linie Lausanne-Simplon wie auch die Schmalspurbahn Chemin de fer Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry (AOMC) passieren Monthey. Mit den Zügen der AOMC und mit dem Auto kann man das nahe liegende Skigebiet "Portes du Soleil" in ca. 30-45 Minuten erreichen.

Monthey.Geographie.
Monthey liegt an der Rhône, die im Nordosten die Gemeindegrenze und die Grenze zum Kanton Waadt ist, zwischen dem Genfersee und Martigny. Die Nachbargemeinden sind Collombey-Muraz, Troistorrents, Vérossaz, Massongex, Bex, Ollon. Eine Exklave Montheys befindet sich rund 10 km südwestlich vom Stadtzentrum. Diese grenzt an die Gemeinden Troistorrents und Val-d'Illiez sowie Frankreich. Der höchste Punkt Montheys befindet sich in dieser Exklave, Pointe de Chésery mit 2'249 m ü. M. Monthey hat vier weitere Exklaven innerhalb der Gemeinde Collombey-Muraz. Der tiefste Punkt ist die Rhône mit 390 m ü. M.
